Understanding all the CBD Terms can be challenging, this can help

Here are some terms around CBD and other Hemp-based terms.

Bioavailability

Bioavailability is an important measure of drug absorption. It indicates the portion of a given dose that successfully enters the systemic circulation when taken orally or through other non-intravenous routes.

Broad Spectrum

Broad Spectrum products include a range of active compounds like cannabinoids and terpenes, which work together to produce what is known as the "entourage effect". This concept suggests that extracts from the whole plant generally offer more benefits than isolated compounds. Broad Spectrum is similar to Full Spectrum CBD, but without the presence of THC.

Cannabidiol - CBD

Cannabidiol, commonly known as CBD, is an active compound found in cannabis. Unlike THC, another main cannabinoid, CBD does not produce a "high." Instead, it interacts with CB2 receptors in the brain's endocannabinoid system, promoting a gentle sense of relaxation. CBD is non-psychoactive and is used as a natural health solution for managing various conditions, such as arthritis.

Cannabigerol - CBG

CBG, or cannabigerol, is an active compound found in cannabis, known as a cannabinoid. Alongside more than 100 other cannabinoids, CBG contributes to the distinct effects and potential health benefits of cannabis. It is found in very small amounts in the plant, classifying it as a “minor” cannabinoid.

Cannabinoid

A large group of chemical compounds found in the cannabis plant. These compounds engage with receptors in the cells of the brain which are related to neurotransmission.

Cannabinol - CBN

CBN, or cannabinol, is considered a minor cannabinoid because it is not naturally abundant in cannabis like THC or CBD. While CBN does not produce a strong "high," it is known for its sedative effects and is regarded as the most sleep-inducing cannabinoid. A dose of 5 mg of CBN is comparable to taking 10 mg of Valium, but with only about 10% of Valium's psychoactive effects.

Cannabis

An extremely complex plant, composed of hundreds of different chemical compounds - over 100!

CBD Oil

A natural oil which is extracted from the flowers and leaves of the cannabis plant.

Curcumin

Curcumin, the primary active compound in turmeric, is believed to possess antioxidant and anticancer properties. When combined with CBD, curcumin is considered a potent anti-inflammatory agent that supports joint health. This combination is also thought to benefit digestive, cardiovascular, cognitive, and immune health.

Efficacy

The ability to create a beneficial effect. According to the Mayo Clinic, researchers conducted randomized trials on CBD oils to evaluate their effectiveness. The results showed that CBD can be helpful for conditions such as muscle spasms, nausea, and vomiting. However, its primary use is to support overall well-being. As research progresses, we are likely to uncover more holistic health applications for CBD.

Endocannabinoid System (ECS)

The endocannabinoid system is a complex cell-signaling network discovered by researchers in the early 1990s while studying THC, a prominent cannabinoid. This system helps regulate various functions and processes, including sleep, mood, appetite, memory, and reproductive health.

"Entourage Effect"

The entourage effect refers to the combined impact of various compounds in cannabis working synergistically to produce a more significant effect than each compound would individually. The primary contributors to this effect are cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids. The concept suggests that whole plant extracts typically offer more benefits than isolated components.

Full Spectrum

The term “full spectrum” refers to the complete range of cannabinoids and other compounds present in cannabis, which contribute to the entourage effect. Full spectrum CBD oil retains all cannabinoids, including trace amounts of THC, to maximize the potential benefits of these compounds working together. Typically, full spectrum CBD products contain less than 0.3% THC.

Hemp

Hemp is a variety of the Cannabis Sativa plant that contains only trace amounts of THC and high levels of CBD. The fibers from hemp are used in industries such as textiles, paper, and automobiles. CBD is extracted from hemp for various uses. Until December 2018, growing hemp was illegal in the U.S. on a federal level. However, the 2018 Farm Bill lifted this ban, allowing hemp cultivation as long as it contains no more than 0.3% THC.

Homeostasis

In biology, homeostasis refers to the internal processes that help maintain balance within living organisms. These systems, including the endocannabinoid system, work constantly to create a stable environment that supports optimal cellular function, contributing to overall health and well-being in the organism.

Marijauna

The psychoactive dried resinous flower buds and leaves of the female hemp or cannabis plant (Cannabis sativa orC. indica) that contain high levels of THC.

Melatonin

Melatonin is a widely used dietary supplement, well-known for its ability to help with sleep. However, it also has beneficial effects on other areas of health, such as supporting immune function and regulating blood pressure.
Additionally, melatonin acts as an antioxidant, and some studies suggest it may have a significant impact on various health conditions.

Nano - Nanoemulsion

A process where hemp oil goes through a proprietary proces that transforms it into water-soluble, nano-sized particles which leads to greater absorption and therefore enhanced efficacy.

THC - Tetrahydrocannabinol

Tetrhydrocannabinol (THC) is a crystalline compound that is the main active ingredient of cannabis.
THC is well-known for producing psychoactive effects in users of cannabis products—the compound responsible for the high associated with cannabis use.

Third-party Lab Testing

Third-party lab testing is a quality control phase of manufacturing. It involves an independent organization’s review of the manufacturing process and end-results of a manufactured good. The purpose of this testing ensures that the final product complies with specific safety and quality standards.

Tincture

Many CBD companies create tinctures by infusing CBD oil with alcohol. However, CBD tinctures often use organic extra virgin olive oil or organic medium-chain triglyceride (MCT) oil, which is gentler.

These tinctures are taken orally, either under the tongue (sublingually) or mixed into food or drinks. They are typically packaged in small glass bottles with dropper caps for easy, precise dosing.
Tinctures are a popular method of consuming CBD because they don’t require smoking or inhaling.

Topical

Topical CBD products, such as lotions and creams, are a newer form of cannabis product designed to be applied directly to the skin. They are commonly used to help with pain relief and skin issues. While some topicals may contain THC, the way they are absorbed through the skin prevents them from causing the "high" typically associated with other cannabis products.
